If the practitioner needs an examination, investigation, records or local review before making a safe decision, that may need to happen first.

Two layers of law. One prescribing decision
Commonwealth: Most medicinal cannabis products are not included in the ARTG. Access to unapproved products generally occurs through TGA pathways.
Queensland: Queensland Health states that medical practitioners and nurse practitioners can prescribe Schedule 4 CBD and Schedule 8 THC or THC:CBD medicinal cannabis without a separate Queensland approval, while Commonwealth requirements for unapproved products still apply.
Gold Coast: a local pickup option when the prescription comes first

In regional Queensland, the postcode changes the logistics
For someone in Toowoomba, Townsville, Cairns or further afield, getting to the consultation can be simpler than getting the medicine afterwards.
A practitioner may also recommend local examination, investigations or face-to-face review when the clinical picture cannot be assessed adequately at a distance.
The details that can change a prescribing decision
There is no legitimate “tick enough boxes and qualify” formula. The assessment is a risk–benefit decision built from the patient’s actual history.
Clinical picture
Diagnosis or symptoms, duration, severity, previous treatment, response to treatment and what the patient is hoping to improve.
Medicines
Current prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, interactions and previous adverse effects.
Safety
Mental-health history where relevant, substance-use risk, cardiovascular or other clinical considerations.
Daily life
Driving, safety-sensitive work, caring responsibilities and practical ability to follow a treatment plan.
Follow-up
How response, adverse effects and ongoing suitability would be reviewed after treatment starts.
THC and driving in Queensland: what the current rule means
The Queensland Government states that it is illegal to drive while being treated with medicinal cannabis that contains THC. A valid prescription cannot be used as a defence to a positive roadside THC test.
Patients should confirm what their prescribed medicine contains and ask their practitioner or pharmacist about driving and impairment.
What may appear on the bill after the appointment
The appointment fee may not be the only cost. A patient may later pay for follow-up, the prescribed medicine itself, pharmacy dispensing or delivery.
